George Pell’s victim reveals he cannot ‘take comfort’ in disgraced cardinal’s sentencing

"It is hard for me to allow myself to feel the gravity of this moment. The moment when the sentence is handed down. The moment when justice is done," the unidentified victim said in a statement read by his lawyer, Dr Vivian Waller.

"It is hard for me, for the time being, to take comfort in this outcome.

"I appreciate that the court has acknowledged what was inflicted upon me as a child. However, there is no rest for me."

The Roman Catholic cardinal was this morning sentenced to a maximum of six years, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months, in a Melbourne court.

He had been convicted of five offences, including the oral rape of a 13-year-old choirboy, committed in the 1990s.

Victims and supporters outside court said "that a small dose of justice" had been handed down but that justice didn't extend to the victims who had committed suicide or died from their injuries.

"No justice for my brother" one yelled.

"At least he's in jail" said another.

"When you think that a child's life is destroyed from the moment the abuse occurs to the day that they die, George Pell got off really, really lightly," Rhonda Janetzki from the Care Leavers of Australasia Network told 9News.

"I would have liked to have seen him spend the rest of his natural life in jail reflecting on the crimes he has committed."

Shine Lawyers’ National Abuse Law Manager, Lisa Flynn spoke on behalf of the deceased victim’s father saying Pell’s sentence was “a disappointment”.

“The criminal justice system has only partially satisfied our client’s pursuit for justice today. It’s now on us as his civil litigators to keep pushing for more just outcomes,” said Flynn.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged Australians to support survivors of child sexual abuse.

"I would just ask Australians today to get around those who have been victims of child sexual abuse," Mr Morrison said ahead of the sentencing.

"Let them know we know it happened, that we want to help you be stronger and to survive what is the most abominable you could think that could happen to an individual with a breach of trust.

There were mixed emotions outside court when the chief judge Kidd handed down his sentence. (9news)

"For me, it's about those against who this abuse was directed and acted upon. It's the most abhorrent thing I can think of."

Pell, who was until late-February the Vatican's treasurer, is the highest-ranking Catholic in the world to be convicted of child sexual abuse.

Mr Morrison said it was important to ensure victims became survivors of abuse.

"I led the national apology to these victims. My thoughts are only with them," Mr Morrison said.
